Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera 1976 - World Of Classic Cars -

Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera 1976

The Turbo Carrera, as it was first called in the US, was introduced as a 1975 model and put Porsche firmly in the lead of the affordable supercar market, using technology created for its successful racing program. The bodywork featured large fender flares to accommodate widened Fuchs forged alloy wheels, and there was a rubber front air dam and a broad “whale-tail” rear spoiler that was a development of the iconic “ducktail” that first appeared on the ’73 Carrera RS. The Type 930 was powered by a potent three-liter, air-cooled, six-cylinder engine fitted with a single KKK turbocharger delivering 245 horsepower at a maximum of 11.5 pounds of boost, even when fitted with mandatory emissions equipment for the US market. A four-speed manual transaxle with wide ratios was deemed appropriate to handle the Turbo’s 253 foot-pounds of torque and carry this amazing new sports car to a maximum speed of more than 155 mph. Large four-wheel ventilated disc brakes could haul the Turbo down safely from any speed.

This late-1976 production Turbo Carrera is one of just 530 J-Series US-specification examples constructed, and there is little question that it is one of the finest in the world. It is believed to be one of only three 1976 Turbos delivered in special-order Platinum Metallic/W1 paint with black anodized window trim and the only example in that color to be fitted with a “match-to-sample” brown leather interior. It was originally delivered by Ely Porsche-Audi of Hayward, California, to its first owner, Mr. Donald Best of San Leandro, on July 14, 1976. In 1978, the Turbo was acquired by Mr. David Nervell of Santa Cruz, California, who retained the car until late 2014, when it was acquired by the consignor. Mr. Nervell was an active member of the Porsche Club of America, and he displayed this wonderful Turbo Carrera at the Zone 7 Concours hosted by PCA’s Monterey Bay Region at Carmel Valley Park, winning its class with a nearly perfect score of 248 of a possible 250 points.

This very special Turbo Carrera left the factory equipped with an electric sunroof, electric windows, air-conditioning, tinted glass, a Blaupunkt AM/FM/Cassette stereo system, a rear-window wiper, a headlamp washing system, fog lamps, and a set of Pirelli tires. This Porsche presents near flawless paint, an extremely clean underbody, and a blemish-free interior, with floor mats still in plastic packaging.
