The Porsche 993 was introduced in 1993 as a replacement for the 964 generation of the iconic 911 model and was built until 1998. Regarded by many as the best generation of 911's ever produced from Stuttgart, this car was the last to use the air cooled flat six engine that had powered 911's for previous thirty years.
The 993 was offered in a number of guises and specifications during its production life including two and four wheel drive drive trains, known as Carrera and Carrera 4 respectively, the Targa body was an option and the flagship Turbo model now offered four wheel drive making it an extremely fast car.
The 993 was the first generation 911 to have standard six-speed manual transmission and the Carrera, Carrera S, Cabriolet and Targa models (2WD) were available with a Tiptronic 4-speed automatic transmission which was first introduced in the 964. Beginning with1995 model, Porsche offered the Tiptronic S with steering wheel mounted controls and refined software for smoother, quicker shifts which were capable of recognizing climbs and descents.
