Bedford J5 LWB Tipper 1967 - World Of Classic Cars -

Bedford J5 LWB Tipper 1967

Bedford was a subsidiary company of Vauxhall Motors which was the provider of commercial vehicles for the UK and export markets. The origins of Vauxhall Motors can be traced to 1857 when Alexander Wilson founded the Vauxhall Iron Works in Wandsworth Road, Vauxhall, London. Vauxhall Motors moved to Luton in 1905 and in November 1925 Vauxhall was acquired by General Motors. During World War II production of civilian vehicles was suspended, and Vauxhall was given the task of building the Churchill tanks. The Bedford TJ was first manufactured in 1958 and was an updated version of the TD range. The TJ was available in the United Kingdom up until 1975, after 1975 it was manufactured only for export. Production continued until 1986, after then it was manufactured by AWD into the early 1990's. Both petrol and diesel engines were available, the lightest (J0 designation) could be specified with the 2.6 litre (later 3.3) straight six petrol engine from the Vauxhall Cresta and offered saloon car levels of performance. TJs were not large sellers within the UK however some high profile fleets did utilise them- noteably the AA and British Telecom.

Dennis Carmichael Fire Engine 1989 - World Of Classic Cars -

Dennis Carmichael Fire Engine 1989

The Dennis SS series fire engine was produced from the early 1980s until the 1990s. The Dennis SS was almost identical with the previous RS model. It incorporated the same cab design, engine and gearbox except the SS had a tilting cab which made maintenance and overhaul much easier. It could be fitted with a variety of bodies by Dennis and other coachbuilders such as JDC, Carmichael and Fulton Wylie. Even though the cab design of the SS dates from 1978, they are seen to this day in fire brigades throughout the world with many still in front-line use. Several variants were built. The earlier models (SS130-SS137) were powered by Perkins V8 engines, with both manual and automatic gearboxes. Later models (SS233-SS245) were powered by Cummins diesel engines. Most appliances had Kirkstall & Eaton axles fitted, front and rear respectively, some with limited slip differentials. All chassis came with a choice of 500gpm or 1,000gpm fire pumps, depending on application.

Commer Q4 Utility Truck 1946 - World Of Classic Cars -

Commer Q4 Utility Truck 1946

Commer was a British manufacturer of commercial vehicles which existed from 1905 until 1979. Commer vehicles included car derived vans, light vans, medium to heavy commercial trucks, military vehicles and buses. The Commer brand was exported widely, with examples, albeit collectors' vehicles, still running far from the UK manufacturing base.
Commer made a range of military vehicles for WW2, with the range still in use in the 1980's.  During the war, British humourist Frank Muir, serving in the army, reported a broken down vehicle over his radio with the words ""The Commer has come to a full stop.""
