Chevron B21 1972 - World Of Classic Cars -

Chevron B21 1972

Derek Bennett was the individual responsible for the formation of Chevron Cars Ltd. He was a brilliant engineer, mostly self-taught and had a talent for modifying, repairing and sculpting automobiles. When he was not working at the factory, he could often be seen at nearby tracks where he raced mostly custom-built racing cars.  The vehicles he constructed were dubbed 'Bennett Specials' up until the 'Chevron'; the name derived from a Highway Code symbol.

races only a few years later. The first Chevron, the B1 was unveiled in 1965. Many evolutions had been launched during the following years, including the B5 which was fitted with a 2 litre V8 BRM engine and competed in Group 6 racing. It would bring the first win in an international race for Chevron, with a 1st OA at Brands Hatch with Brian Redman behind the wheel.
A new model was launched almost every year and in 1971 the B19 was unveiled to compete with the new Lola T210. With a spyder body and very powerful 2 litre engine, the B19 was extremely fast. The following year, the B21 was offered as an evolution of the B19.

Chevron B8 DBE 70/023 1969 - World Of Classic Cars -

Chevron B8 DBE 70/023 1969

The hugely-successful Chevron B8 first appeared in 1968, usually with BMW 2-litre engines but also with the Ford FVA, FVC and even the Lotus Climax engine. It was homologated into Group 4 from 1 March 1968 on the basis that 50 were built. To help the numbers every rebuild counted as a new car - a habit that would continue into the B16, B19 and even the B21.
The chassis plate on this B8 indicates that this car is chassis number DBE 70/023. In addition, on the right hand side of the chassis, (adjacent to the gearbox cross member) it is stamped 'AM23'. It was customary for Arch Motors, the engineers responsible for building the B8 chassis, to stamp the chassis in this way.
