Mercedes-Benz 220S Fintail 1964 |
The Mercedes-Benz W 111 was a chassis code given to its top-of-the-range of vehicles, including four-door saloons, produced from 1959 to 1968, and two-door coupés and cabriolets built from 1961 to 1971. The W111 title was initially attributed to six-cylinder cars with 2.2-litre engines. Production of the four-door saloon began in August 1959 and was premiered at the Frankfurt Auto Show in Autumn. Initially the series consisted of three models; the 220b, 220Sb, and the 220SEb replacing the popular 'Ponton' saloon respectively. Powering the three cars was an identical 2195cc straight-six engine carried over from the previous generation. It produced 95bhp and was capable of accelerating the car to 100mph. The top range 220SEb featured Bosch fuel injection and produced 120bhp with a top speed of 107mph in 14 seconds.
