Maserati 3200GT 2000

The Maserati 3200 GT was styled by Italdesign whose founder and head, Giorgetto Giugiaro, previously designed, amongst others, the Ghibli, Bora and Merak and so certainly had the pedigree behind him. Sold mainly in Europe, the 3200GT shared the twin-turbo 3.2 litre, V8 featured in the Quattroporte IV and Shamal, revised and tuned to 365bhp. The tail-lights consisted of LEDs arranged in the shape of a boomerang. The outer layer of the 'boomerang' provided the brake light, with the inner layer providing the directional indicator. Sadly, the US insisted on bulbs and so, as is so often the way, style made way for bureaucracy. Nevertheless, it went on to be a great success until 2007, when it was replaced by Maserati's bigger and more elegant GranTurismo which saw the return of LED taillight clusters, this time meeting US regulations.
