Volvo 850 T-5R 1995 - World Of Classic Cars -

Volvo 850 T-5R 1995

For model year 1995 a high performance version of the 850, developed in part with Porsche, was released and designated the 850 T-5R. The vehicle was based on the 850 Turbo, utilising the engine with a special ECU that added an additional 0.1 bar of turbocharger boost pressure giving the engine an extra 18bhp for a total of 243bhp and 250lb/ft of torque. The T-5R was renowned as a sleeper car; despite its boxy, understated appearance, it was capable of accelerating from 0 to 60mph in 5.8 seconds with the top speed electronically limited to 152mph. The engine tuning was co-developed with Porsche, as was the transmission and other power train components. Porsche also aided in designing some of the interior such as the Alcantara seat inserts and nearly every feature was available as standard. 1995 was the only year that the model was badged as a 'T-5R'; the following year, as Volvo recognised the vehicle's popularity, the model was renewed with the designation '850R'.
