At the end of 1984, Tom Walkinshaw of TWR announced his intention to build a range of special XJS Coupés under the name TWR Sport and called it the XJR-S. A significant development had gone into the cars, aided by TWR's experience with European touring car XJ-S's they had raced for Jaguar. A wind tunnel was used to design the new GRP body kit which provided a 12% improvement coefficient. Exterior brightwork was either painted satin black or finished to co-ordinate with the body colors and bodies were painted in a specific range of single tone or two tone schemes. Goodyear NCT Eagle tyres. Mechanically the buyer had the choice of either a conventional 3.6 litre six cylinder or a 5.3 litre V12 engine. Alternatively a well breathed on 6.0 litre V12 engine was available with a special long throw crankshaft, forged pistons and remapped electronics which took the car up to 380bhp and a top speed of 170mph.
