Ford Thames 400E 1965 |
The Thames 400E was a commercial vehicle built by Ford and introduced in 1957 with production of the range continuing until September 1965 by which time a total of 187,000 had been built. Looking back on the 400E today it can be seen as an important link in the chain of Ford vans that have appeared over the years; it represented a massive step forward, notably in the engine, body, gear change, suspension and load capacity. Unlike the smaller vans, the 400E changed very little throughout its production; the range started and finished much the same, although as it went on it gathered more body styles with even the early eight seater estate version returning in the last few years of its production run. All in all it was a good van, offering both versatility and reliability. It could put up a respectable performance and for deliveries it was most useful, particularly with the nearside door offering access to the load. Without doubt, the 400E will bring back many memories to many light van drivers.
